Three Rivers Heritage Trail User Survey and Economic Impact Analysis

The study found that in 2014 this Pittsburgh trail received roughly 622,873 visits resulting in an economic impact of $8,286,026. 75.5% of users were city residents, 15.5% lived in the county outside of Pittsburgh and 9% came from further away.

Survey & Economic Impact Findings:

  • In 2014, 82.6% of the sample responded that their use of the trail had influenced a purchase of "hard goods" items including bikes, bike supplies, auto accessories, shoes, and clothing.
    • The average of these "hard goods" purchases was $444.77.
    • With an estimated 622,873 trail users in 2014, and an average life span of six years for "hard goods" purchses, this equates to $1,842,288 in trail related revenue.
  • 57.5% of the sample responded that their use of the trail had influenced a purchase of "soft goods" including drinks and food items on their most recent visit to the trail.
    • The average of these "soft goods" purchses was $16.53.
    • With an estimated 622,873 trail users in 2014, this equates to $5,866,660 in trail related revenue.
  •  Less 3% of the sample indicated that their trail visit included an overnight stay.
